This muscle runs left to right and starts and the bottom of the ribs and goes down to the pubic bone. This is your body's natural back brace.
The elusive 6-pack ;)
This muscle runs top to bottom from the bottom of the ribs to the top of the pubic bone. We need strength in this muscle group for spine health and the ability to move in all the ways motherhood demands.
The 6-pack muscle stretches during pregnancy to allow baby to grow. Its separates from down the center line of the 6-pack, but there is not a hole, just stretched tissue.
- it doesn't matter if the abs come back together, what matters is that the tissue in the center contracts when you are active and works as supportive connective tissue to support your spine during movement
- some women close the ab separation with exercise, some do not, both groups are successful at alleviating all relating complaints (like back pain) with improving the function of the connection tissue that stretched.
These muscles work as a hammock to support your pelvic organs.
A change in pelvic floor muscle control, firing patterns, strength and weakness contribute to development of pelvic floor dysfunction.
Most times this is not the answer to helping pelvic floor dysfunction, BUT you do need to know how to kegel properly and have the ability to do a quick contraction as well as a slow, deeper contraction.
This skill is possibly more important than the kegel. Control when releasing the pelvic floor and ability to release it allows for improved bowel and bladder function.
- use breathing to work on pelvic floor contraction(kegel) and relaxation: inhale to relax, exhale to contract.
- practice relaxing your pelvic floor in the shower so you can feel what a full relaxation feels like without the risk of leaking
- pay attention to times during the day when you hold your pelvic floor tight - cooking, blow drying hair, washing dishes, driving - and practice releasing tension
